Vasogenic Brain Edema Formation

چکیده

Brain edema (BE) research lacks quantitative regional methods. We modified the method of Pappius and McCann (1969), who used radioactive iodinated P serum albumin (R1SA) as a label for vasogenic BE fluid. To correct for intravascular plasma volume we used Cr^ labelled red blood cells and calculated equivalent extravascular plasma volume (EVPV). The modified RISA method was compared with a standard method for measuring increased tissue water, i.e. the change in wef.dry weights. Anesthetized rabbits were subjected to unilateral cortical freeze injury and sacrificed three hours later. The lesion corresponding to the area of blood brain barrier (BBB) breakdown was delineated by Evan's blue staining. That area and the two adjacent

Cellular and regional specific changes in multidrug efflux transporter expression during recovery of vasogenic edema in the rat hippocampus and piriform cortex

In the present study, we investigated the characteristics of drug efflux transporter expressions following status epilepticus (SE). In the hippocampus and piriform cortex (PC), vasogenic edema peaked 3-4 days after SE. The expression of breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP), multidrug resistance protein-4 (MRP4), and p-glycoprotein (p-GP) were decreased 4 days after SE when vasogenic edema wa...

HYPERTONIC LACTATED RINGER\'S SOLUTION IN EXPERIMENTAL VASOGENIC BRAIN EDEMA IN RABBITS: EFFECT ON BLOOD PRESSURE, ELEC TROLYTES, BLOOD UREA NITROGEN , TOTAL PROTEIN CONCENTRATION, PLASMA OSMOLALITY, AND CEREBRAL WATER CONTENT

Hypertonic solutions play an important role in the treatment of tissue edema. Following the induction of experimental vasogenic brain edema by occlusion of the common carotid arteries in eight rabbits, the effect of hypertonic lactated Ringer's solution (subjects), vs. isotonic lactated Ringer's solution (control), was studied on blood pressure, electrolyte (sodium, potassium, and calcium) ...

Different expressions of AQP1, AQP4, eNOS, and VEGF proteins in ischemic versus non-ischemic cerebropathy in rats: potential roles of AQP1 and eNOS in hydrocephalic and vasogenic edema formation

In this study, expressions of aquaporin (AQP) 1, AQP4, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), and vascular endothelial growth factor in blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier and blood-brain barrier (BBB) are examined in rat choroid plexus and peri-infarcted hippocampal formation (HF) following systemic hyponatremia (SH) and permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO). These events a...

Status Epilepticus Induces Vasogenic Edema via Tumor Necrosis Factor-α/ Endothelin-1-Mediated Two Different Pathways

Status epilepticus (SE) induces vasogenic edema in the piriform cortex with disruptions of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). However, the mechanisms of vasogenic edema formation following SE are still unknown. Here we investigated the endothelin B (ETB) receptor-mediated pathway of SE-induced vasogenic edema. Following SE, the release of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) stimulated endothelin-1 (ET-...

Dynamic regulation of aquaporin-4 water channels in neurological disorders

Aquaporin-4 water channels play a central role in brain water regulation in neurological disorders. Aquaporin-4 is abundantly expressed at the astroglial endfeet facing the cerebral vasculature and the pial membrane, and both its expression level and subcellular localization significantly influence brain water transport. However, measurements of aquaporin-4 levels in animal models of brain inju...

Current AQP research: therapeutic approaches to ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke

The role of aquaporins (AQPs) in the formation of cerebral edema after stroke: Stroke can be classified into either ischemic or hemorrhagic based on their etiological mechanism. Cerebral edema development often accompanies both ischemic infarct and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Cerebral edema is differentiated according to their underlying mechanism and time course: cytotoxic and vasogenic. C...
